Is design still necessary in online learning?

 Design helps you compete

It so happened that we live in an era of information explosion and we are witnessing a constant increase in the amount of information and the speed of its appearance. Content consumption has grown to record levels, and users have to compete hard for user attention. Take an online course or hang out in reels? Scroll through the Telegram channel or watch a movie by subscription? Every day people decide how to manage their free time. Electronic educational products often have to compete with products in which millions have been invested in design and where designers have worked out every little thing - color shade, button size, size, fonts, icons, found cool images and metaphors. Just to captivate and hold the user. Can your educational product, even if it is very useful and informative, withstand this insane competition if you do not invest in design?

Why design in e-learning?

The work on an e-learning course can be divided into three stages - methodology, design and assembly. Thinking over the methodology, we create an electronic course matrix - we are looking for a way to present information, we decide in what order and what formats we will use: videos, longreads, slides. At the same stage, we prepare the content. It is the methodology that solves the problem of teaching. This is the most significant stage, without which the course cannot exist.

Assembly is the technical stage associated with uploading the course that we have created to the distance learning system of the project customer. Large companies have their own systems, they allow you to assign different courses to individual groups of employees and track their results.

Of all the stages of work, design seems to be the least necessary. You can opt out of it, especially in the B2B segment, where most of the courses are mandatory. If an employee has not been trained, he will not be able to get a promotion, a bonus, and in some cases, continue to work in the company.
